There’s a growing concern among marketers that AI is eliminating website traffic. Headlines frequently frame AI Overviews and chatbots as the demise of SEO.
But the unease around zero-click search misses the bigger story: Zero-click behavior has existed for more than a decade, and though users are clicking less, the real change is that earning visibility now requires greater strategic depth.
In other words, despite the newness, speed, and innovation of the technology, AI hasn’t killed SEO. It has raised the bar for content quality, topical authority, and multiplatform optimization.
Zero-Click Search Existed Long Before AI
Zero-click searches were already common between 2013 and 2015. Roughly 40% of searches during that period ended without a click to a website.
Answers were surfaced directly within search results via maps, knowledge graphs, rich snippets, and People Also Ask results. These features allowed users to refine their searches instead of clicking, and many users found enough information to end their search.
Mobile accelerated the clickless search trend. Most zero-click activity throughout the 2010s came from mobile devices because limited screen space increased reliance on Google-provided answers.
Mobile usage surged during 2020, when zero-click searches reached nearly 65%. By 2022, the rate had subsided to roughly 58%.
All these trends occurred before public AI tools existed. So, marketers should view the latest iteration of zero-click behavior as an evolution of search—not a phenomenon created by AI.

Though Zero-Click Grew Fast, Search Volume Grew Faster
Discussions about zero-click search often focus exclusively on percentages, but actual search volume provides important context. Google served approximately 1.2 trillion searches in 2012; by 2025, search volume exceeded 5 trillion annual searches.
Total search demand continues to rise dramatically, outpacing the growth of zero-click behavior. More searches are creating more opportunities to be discovered. While visibility is still available, competition for it has intensified.
AI Overviews Shift How Answers Are Delivered
None of this is to say that AI Overviews aren’t contributing to zero-click behavior. They are, in a big way. AI Overviews now appear in a significant share of searches, summarizing answers directly within search results and pushing down the organic blue link listings on users’ screens.
Google Analytics treats clicks from AI Overviews as organic traffic. This is because the same foundational ranking systems help determine which content earns citations.
So, SEO and AI visibility are not separate disciplines; success in AI Overviews is closely tied to SEO fundamentals. Think of AI visibility as an extension of SEO, not a replacement for it.
AI Search and Traditional Search Work Differently
In traditional organic search, the search engine returns a list of webpages as organic blue links. Users choose which results to visit, and they get the answers by clicking through.
AI systems identify specific statements, facts, and paragraphs within a webpage. The chatbot extracts that content from multiple sources and synthesizes it into a new answer for the user.
Because of this, we’re seeing a shift in content evaluation. Marketers should understand that individual passages matter just as much as entire pages. The content must be understandable and “passage-worthy” outside the context of the page; clear, specific answers are becoming increasingly valuable.
Why Niche Content Is Your SEO Advantage
This isn’t another talk about SEO basics. It’s a roadmap for building search-visible, AI-resilient, and student-relevant content using the tools and team you already have.
AI Creates More Search Opportunities
This may come as a surprise, but AI creates more search opportunities (not fewer) because of query fan-out. That’s when a user’s query expands into multiple related searches:
- Why should I get a nursing degree?
- How much does an RN make vs. Aan LPN?
- Nursing programs near me.
AI Overviews do not typically rely on a single search. An AI chatbot searches broadly for supporting information, analyzing multiple content sources at once. This is why multiple citation opportunities can emerge from a single user query. And it’s why organizations that cover topics comprehensively (i.e., show authority on the subject) increase their chances of being found in AI search.
Today’s SEO Requires Greater Strategy and Skill
Depth and authority matter more than ever in today’s content environment. Surface-level content struggles to stand out. Comprehensive topic coverage creates more citation opportunities because AI systems look for credible, trustworthy sources. Breadth and consistency across a subject area matter shows human users and robot crawlers that you know your stuff and you’re worth listening to (and citing).
Think of each individual section of your content as a chance to earn visibility. Answer-focused writing improves discoverability, since every paragraph can become a potential citation.
As you’re drafting content, think through the next several questions a user might ask after they read your paragraph. Does it make sense for this piece of content to answer those questions? If yes, do so—you’ll delight your readers by intuiting their next move, and you’ll increase your chances of being found in AI search.
One of the key factors in the answer-centric content approach is structuring your content to help AI understand its context. That means setting up your page with:
- Logical hierarchy
- Strong headings
- Supporting evidence
- Schema markup
- Natural, intentional keywords and phrases
Traditional keyword targeting has matured into semantic and contextual relevance. SEO success today requires a balanced blend of skill in content strategy, technical SEO, user experience, and information architecture.
AI Is Raising the Bar for SEO
There is a common misperception that AI is reducing the value of SEO. A more accurate interpretation is that AI is increasing SEO’s complexity, because the standards for earning visibility are higher than ever.
Zero-click search has been part of search behavior for more than a decade. AI Overviews accelerated an existing trend rather than creating a new one. Search demand continues to grow, creating substantial visibility opportunities.
The organizations that succeed will be those that invest in better content with stronger authority, earning their place in answer compilations and not just gathering clicks.
