Making Movies: What YouTube is Really All About: I Okay, so you get the brand in social media thing. You decide, like many of us, that video is the way to go. Why? Because it’s the one piece of social media you think you understand—we all grew up watching television, right? How hard can it be? Turns out, it’s almost always harder than we think…and disappointing when your prized YouTube video earns two views and no comments after three months. What happened to all that viral action you were promised? As with social networks, just building it is no guarantee that anyone will come…and YouTube videos that get noticed are not so easy to build. Scan any number of institutional YouTube.edu pages and you’ll see lots of videos averaging well under 100 views. Why does this happen?Being Heard Through the Noise By Brenda Harms, Principal Consultant In my last post I talked about the cluttered landscape of adult student programs and the need to be differentiated from your competition. While we talk about this it is important to know that for some of you this may be a much more pressing issue than for others – depending on your landscape. So as you read this blog please take into consideration your environmental circumstance, keeping in mind that everyone competes with online programs, no matter where you are. Finding the place in the adult student market where you are able to stand out in a way your competitors can’t is a challenge for a number of reasons. Visions to See By In this post, I want to present four visions. The first is what I believe is the best vision ever written, Dr. Martin Luther. King’s “I Have a Dream.” Presented on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial before a crowd of 250,000 civil rights supporters in 1963, the speech is often considered by many to be the top American speech of the 20th century. Does This College Fit Me? For a bunch of years a long time ago I ran an undergraduate admission program at a really great, mid-sized independent liberal arts college in the middle of one of the toughest recruitment markets in the nation (because there were so many other really great, mid-sized independent liberal arts colleges within shouting distance of mine). And every spring, my super staff and I would agonize through yield season, quietly celebrating each victory…but painfully tailspinning into deep blue vortexes of doom with every loss of a much-sought-after prospective student. It was our habit to probe fairly aggressively when a student advised she was going to one of our competing schools. And just like your admission team hears every year, “departing” prospects cited myriad reasons.
